Back to book club.

Standard

After a summer of excess, including reading of course 😉 , I am trying to re-group well in my brain that is !!

It’s that time of year when school bags are being re-packed, stationary supplies are being bought & early Sunday bath & bedtimes are a welcoming thought.

With the slight drop in temperatures the endurance of cooking in the summer heat, will once again become a memory.  The endless changing beds from visitors , the beach bag emptying with sandy deposits , the never ending damp towels dropped from the pool too will be part of summer I don’t mind waving goodbye to until next year.

Summer 2012 like many others I have had in Spain has been full to bursting, candle burning at both ends stylee.

I LOVE IT.

Adios Summer it’s been a great one – Hello Autumn looking forward to seeing you.

Home-made Allioli

Standard

To make your own mayonnaise is so simple and so rewarding, knowing all the ingredients that are in the mixture, and for me using many that are local or homegrown, garlic’s from my veg patch, eggs from my hens, oil from my olive harvest.

Today I made up a lovely bowl full, ready to go with my ‘retro’ whole poached salmon I am preparing for a wedding I am catering for on Saturday, hopefully it will last that long, as the children have a taste for it.

Other ways I like to enjoy it, is in potato salad, creating the local Patatas allilo, or spooned over hard boiled eggs, or dolloped on a homemade burger. Its also delicious for dipping large prawns in.

Here is my recipe it makes 600mls, easily halved.

La Rosilla Allioli

2 large free range eggs.

2 tbsp of white wine vinegar.

4 cloves of garlic crushed.

1 tsp of rock salt.

2 tsp of mustard.

600 ml of Olive oil or if you prefer a lighter taste 300ml Olive / 300ml sunflower.

In a liquidiser or in a bowl put in all ingredients except oil, blend or whisk until a frothy emulsion is made.

Then little by little add the oil, whisking/blending as you go, until all oil is used and you have a thick glossy Mayo.

You can add other ingredients or omit the garlic, try adding lemon zest, or chopped chives.

Happy Whisking 🙂

From the rooftops.

A night out in the city ‘Malaga’ is always a treat, a city that never sleeps, a cosmopolitan air, with people ambling, wandering and soaking up the atmosphere.

Rooftop terrace AC Marriott Malaga

Joining up with friends to celebrate a friends special birthday, we headed to the bright lights, big city, glammed up and full of frivolity.

Las Chicas 😉

Malaga Sunset

We indulged in cocktails on the rooftops, taking in the the breathtaking views of the city below, as the sunset in the mountains beyond, the city lights twinkled, the monuments were lit up to shine out their glory.

Families enjoying their evening ‘Paseo’ dressed in their finery, all ages enjoying the delights of such a marvelous city.

After cocktails & laughter we made our way through the gardens, along to the new Puerto ‘El Muelle’ in such of our late night supper. Ships and Yachts lined the port majestically, restaurants, wine bars and luxury shopping tempted everyone.

Al restaurants were buzzing & full a welcoming sight, we decided on Mexican cuisine and were not disappointed, Rose & red flowed & conversation grew louder 😉

El Muelle Malaga

Needing to walk off our supper, we strolled back to the centre, gave our taxi a quick call, and then grabbed a last late night cocktail, in a uber trendy bar ‘Strawberry Mojito’ DELISH 🙂

A day out with the girls.

Standard

My normal Monday routine, of getting back on track, re-grouping and focusing, was pleasantly disturbed by a day out with the ‘Girls’ to a fabulous Spa on the Costa, Hydros Boutique Hotel & Spa, Benalmadena.

Spa day with the ‘Girls’

Hydros Spa Hotel

We all boarded a mini bus, from our rural campo abodes, and headed to the Costa for a day of relax & pampering.

The Hotel was calm & tranquil with the most beautiful décor and art, we enjoyed coffees and pastries, before being taken to our Aqua experience, jacuzzi s, hydro baths, tropical showers , steam & Turkish baths of all styles, some of the girls had treatments, I soaked up the atmosphere, read in the sunshine and enjoyed some time out.

After a few hours of washing away our sins 😉 we headed to the bustling Puerto of Benalmadena for wine & lunch, of pastas & salads & people watching.

Beside the seaside.

I have had the most frenetic time recently, work, work & work, but lots of play, play, play too 🙂

Time with friends has featured heavily, in between, cooking for family & clients, Mum’s taxi services, homework patrol, cleaning , blah, blah, blah you know the rest. Sleep seemed to have been put on a back burner, well so much to do so little time, but an odd cheeky siesta was necessary to get me through burning the candles at both ends.

My dear friend Kate from college arrived on a late night flight from Hamburg, for a short-break catchup, after 5 long years of our lives getting in the way, so as you can imagine, wine flowed & tongues wagged. One of our excursion whilst she was holidaying with me, was to the fabulous Tanit Beach Club in Torre del Mar, for our ‘Beside the Seaside’ day. A sea mist kept the temperature bearable and after a much needed coffee and cake to start, we bagsied our sunbeds, we were joined by Maria, and to my delight a ‘Chef’s display’ and TV cameras filming 🙂

Tanit Beach Club

Lunch was enjoyed in their delightful chiringuito, a canape ‘Tapa’ was offered and we shared and grazed on a Salad of goats cheese, walnuts and sultanas with a cana miel dressing, and then Chicken & bacon brochette, with a mustard & honey dressing.

Celebrations in the sun & Blighty

Standard

Months of planning, came to fruition last Sunday with our spectacular Charity Family Fun Day, celebrating the Jubilee in Spain, with traditional sideshows, stalls, entertainment, food and revelry. Over 1000 expats and locals joined in the fun, under the sun. Temperatures soared into the high 30’s, but party on we all did. Children, enjoyed many activities, sports races, pony rides, crafts and more, adults dug deep in their pockets, partaking in the raffles, tombolas, the bar 😉 and yummy foods on offer.

I made hundreds of home-made burgers for a La Rosilla ‘Full Monty’ burger which sold out in a few hours, we made 4 giant paellas too, which went down fabulously.

Feeling the Heat

Cooking in more ways than one

A great day had by all, much many raised for local charities, and a promise of an annual event, after I’ve recovered 😉 !

You can watch a lovely video catching the true spirit of our day here, made by chief organiser and good friend Lisa from

Family Life in Spain.

While I’d been planning with my friends this event, My Mum & Dad back in Blighty were too pulling out all the stops for the jubilee celebrations, fortunately their event was indoors, so they didn’t have to brave the weathers like most including her Majesty 😉

My good old Mum served 200+ teas to local senior citizens, decorated their house, and came 2nd in the local art competition.

Getting into the spirit of things, allows us all to focus on the good, take time to think of something different, but most of all share celebrations with family, friends where ever we are in the world 🙂

La Rosilla – Book Club Birthday

Standard

A year ago, I decided that I needed to stretch myself, or should I say read more.  Give myself a little time out to sit and escape my hectic life .  I had always tended to read the same style of book, dare I say starting with Chic lit, then moving on to one or two chosen authors.

I knew my friends back in ‘Blighty’ had been attending a book club for some time, and often I had chatted to them about their readings.  I was a little unsure whether groups would be too high brow for me, and read too quickly and I wouldn’t keep up, so I thought a book club isn’t going to come to me living on the edge of a mountain, so I thought I must create one myself and encourage others to join.  It seemed others too had been looking for similar past-time, so within a short time I was joined by a lovely group of  ladies, and La Rosilla Book-club, was born

Well a year has passed and our small, but perfectly formed group of readers , have enjoyed a monthly traveling book-club, visiting one another ‘s houses each month to discuss, drink tea & eat cake .  We have shared many genres, including classics, one we couldn’t finish, and others not to all our liking, but we’ve stuck at it and had a great time.  others do read faster than me, and sometimes I am cramming the last few pages just minutes before we meet, but i do it.

Yesterday we celebrated our commitment and birthday with a wonderful afternoon party, we were joined by the Author of our chosen book for the month Joan Fallon , ‘Daughters of Spain’.

Under the rule of Franco, Spain’s military dictator from 1936 until 1975 Spanish women lived very restricted lives, controlled by their fathers, husbands, the Church and the State.   In “Daughters of Spain” women of various ages and from all strata of society relate their experiences and in the process illustrate how the lives of women have changed dramatically since his death.  This series of short, frank interviews gives a dramatic picture of what it was like to be a woman living in Spain under Franco’s regime.

Joan described her adventures of becoming an author, the trials and tribulations of publishing as well as her experiences of having the opportunity to interview many interesting women of Spain.

We will adding further titles of  Joans later in the year including ‘Between the Sierra & the Sea’.

After chatting and discussing we enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea, enjoyed the sunshine, it also became apparent we may have a few budding authors in our midst – so we may well have our very own ‘La Rosilla’ book out one day…watch this space.

You can see Joans write up here .

Sing your Sox off ;) !

Standard

Sing your sox off 😉 !

I have always loved singing, can I sing ? who am I to judge , but love it, I do. It started in school assembly, when I longed for the next hymn or song to be sung to stop the Headmasters waffling s ;). I was chosen to sing solo in a school production of Charlie and the Chocolate factory, with role as the Shopkeeper than on Orange Umpa Lumpa, not sure if it was due to my dulcet tone or my ability to be heard !!!

Singing in Church on a Sunday, carol singing locally and hymns getting more modern and meaningful to me confirmed my enjoyment.

Moving to Spain, I haven’t had the opportunity to sing, well only in the shower 😉  So I was delighted to hear a dear friend of mine, Cheryl had taken the initiative with a Music academy on the coast The International Nelson Music Academy, to form ‘Funky Vocals’ a funky singing group open to anyone & everyone.

On Saturday, together with number 1 daughter, we joined the group for our taster session, we were made most welcome. Feeling a little daunted whether we would cut the mustard or not, this was soon put to rest, when we started the session with fun vocal exercises to warm the vocal chords and break the ice. Soon we were ‘Singing our sox off’ ..with cool tunes like ‘ Aint no mountain high enough’ ‘ Mama Mia ‘ and ‘Any dream will do’ 2 hours flew by, smiles all around , we were left feeling elated and a little exhausted what a work-out.

Since returning home, the house has been filled with humming and singing from ‘Teen’ No 1 daughter, and little ‘Noo’ (8 years old) picking up our song sheets, and saying ‘How does it go Mum ?’

Music, singing, what great therapy, sounds for your soul…

Can’t wait to go again soon, hey and keep a look out I could be on a stage near you soon 😉

Ruta de la Teja.

Never enough hours in the day ! – Ruta De La Teja

Waking yesterday morning, It dawned on me, I needed to put my best foot forward, grab a few hours that I didn’t have, slap on some SPF, fill up my water bottles, don my shorts, as I was off to join Rosie and a small group of ‘Views from the Hills’ members on our hike/trek/walk along the Ruta de la Teja, from the hilltop town of Comares.

Having had a few weeks, or should I say months of hectic-ness, I was actually looking forward to breathing in the air, taking a breather and stopping to look at “ why I live here” ..Being with a ‘dodgy’ motor for sometime, I was kindly collected by Diane with Lisa in tow, who were to be my walking companions. Laughter started with earnest, at my choice of clothes, with the ladies, commenting I looked like a school girl, little did they know, this is what I wanted to feel like, remember the days of excitement when you were off on a school trip ? 😉 – Our’ journey up to Comares allowed us to off load our woes, grumble about aches and pains, bureaucracy and too positive achievements we were all making.

On arriving at Comares we tried to park as close to the plaza as possible, well we didn’t want to waste our energy on the uphill climb, before we’d even started our walk.;) But alas our efforts of plaza parking were duped, as Comares unbeknown to us was in feria mode , Feria de los Mariscos, and the town was being decorated to the nines in Moorish style, with wonderful artisan stalls, an added bonus.

After meeting up with Rosie and friend Rose, seasoned hikers !!! We sipped a necessary coffee in the sunshine, and then started our amble, chatting, taking photos and indulging in the spectacular scenery. The weather was perfect warm and comforting, figs were ripening on the trees, wild gladioli stood majestically, campesinos were collecting herbs and foraging on the hillside , pools of clear fresh water were homes to tiny frogs. Views were amazing, each of us pointing our across the valleys beyond to our homes.

We stopped and enjoyed, our snacks in the shade of almond and olive trees. Walking back up to Comares was the only time, my thighs began to moan a little, but I knew the bar was at the end…ready for me to have a …diet coke ;).

We all agreed to take time out of our schedules, even though we thought we shouldn’t or couldn’t was a great tonic, and walking we should do more often…Next trek – Mazmullar.

Thanks Rosie, thanks walking companions – Enjoyed it x
