Family traditions.

Standard

When I moved into my first brand new starter home with my soon to be husband 20 years ago, I was so excited about having our very own Christmas tree, in our little lounge.  Like everything else in the house it was new and modern, and I wanted my tree to match, minimalist to the max, just white lights and white ribbons, how very then 😉

My tastes soon changed as we moved to a much larger old Georgian house, and our family expanded, we wanted to create a family tradition that would evoke memories, be fun and show our personalities over the years.

So each year, each of us chooses a new tree decoration, nobody is allowed to comment on each others choices, sometimes very hard for me 😉 and from over the years we now have an eclectic tree, full of colour and happy and joyful memories.

This years choices, animals playing a heavy part !

My OH always seems to choose animals, we’ve had a  bear, owl, squirrel and even a gheko, I’m sure he chooses them just to wind me up !  Mine are normally pink and sparkly or food related or hand crafted.  One of my favourites was for the year of a 3rd daughters 1st Christmas, a friend made a papier mache baby wrapped in swaddling.

Supper is always bubbling away  as we busily deck the halls, a hearty one pot wonder ready to be enjoyed, when our home is twinkling in all it’s glory.  It’s amazing as we decorate the tree, singing carols and we find each ornament how we can remember the year and what we were doing, a wonderful tradition, that I hope my children will continue with theirs.

Home-made Ho,Ho,Ho !

Standard

Frugal but fabulous, was the theme for our festive bash for my wonderful ladies group ‘View from the Hills‘.  Secret santas of home-made gifts, gave a novel spin to our evening, Blue Peter and double sided tape, I knew were the first thoughts many of the ladies had, but they’re a crafty & talented group and each of us was rewarded by a  beautiful gift thoughtfully created.

Jams, chutneys, dried chilli hangings, terracotta tree ornaments , melting moments, candles to name a few.

Catch up !

Standard

Catching up on life, keeping up with traditions, getting some fresh air have all been on our agenda this month. We’ve been blessed by glorious weather up in the mountains so far, clear days, beautiful sunrises & sunsets, skies oh so blue. Crisp mornings, and nights still bearable with an extra blanket or two.

Noo, Rizo & Spencer

We’ve taken country walks, to blow away the cobwebs, and breathe in the clear air, and stop and look at what is happening around us. Flowers still blooming, trees full to bursting with citrus, oranges, lemons & grapefruits. The river is gently flowing, perfect to wade in wellies, play pooh sticks, and for the dogs to have their annual swim, well or Spaniel anyway the Water Dog, does everything she can to avoid getting her paws wet !!

We journeyed a little more inland to the spectacular El Torcal natural park, to climb, trek and picnic with our friends aka @familinspain, enjoying the winter sunshine, and trying to walk off our already indulgent excesses.

In the home, we’ve baked, and cured. Tree decorations, mince pies & sausages rolls, which were meant to be for Crimble, but got munched as soon as out of the oven…well who can resist a hot sausage roll.

Our olives have had their month of being bathed in water to extract their bitter juices, and now have been rinsed and marinated in thyme, rosemary, parsley  caraway, orange zest, sherry vinegar, garlic, bay & olive Oil for us to enjoy over the months to come.

So with a slight lull in proceedings today, perhaps I shouldn’t talk to soon, I’ve taken the time to catch up with my goings on….who knows when I’ll have time in the near future.

Out for 3 festive frolics this weeks, god bless my liver & my sanity 😉
